Celestial Relief From Cosmic Pain

The Astrology of Healing

By Dikki-Jo Mullen

Prepared and waiting, earlier this week, I wondered what to do. A really difficult and challenging (o.k., a horrible) horoscope sat on my desk. The client was due in any moment and had specifically said she wanted some hope and good news with her reading today! What to do? I wanted to offer an accurate horoscope interpretation, usually its possible to do this from at least some angle in a birth chart. Those who seek spiritual counseling and astrology are often in a cycle of despair and come in to find out when things will improve. But even my Irish diplomacy (that’s telling someone life is going to the devil in a way so charming that he or she will look forward to the trip) seemed as if it would let me down this time.

This particular client was born with a Grand Fixed Cross in the four powerful angular houses. Transiting Saturn in Scorpio and Mars in Leo were moving to activate it by conjoining the natal Moon and Sun respectively. To the trained eye, it seemed obvious that this chart showed a really rough ride ahead, impacting almost every area of life, from relationships to career to health and self esteem. Its all very well to be able to accurately delineate a chart, but it can be another entirely to present the information in an helpful way so the client leaves with an enhanced sense of well being. This person was already quite desperate and I certainly did not want to make things worse for her. Suddenly I had an idea, what about suggesting some astrological antidotes? The very earliest astrologers used these. Gems, herbs, angel invocations, colors, etc. were once used like a prescription to alleviate problems of the mind, body or spirit as shown in the heavens.

A sense of dread at the sight of an upcoming negative Saturn transit, anger and confrontation revealed by Mars or deception by Neptune might be offset by creating an amicable atmosphere (good vibes) in ones surroundings. Feeling better inside might strengthen the ability to keep calm and carry on, despite the celestial storms afoot.

Here is a list of astrological antidotes to help cure or at least neutralize any planetary woes which are gathering to attack your birth chart.

The Moon Cure

A poorly aspected lunar transit will bring gossip, moodiness, insincerity and general instability. The antidote is inspired by a healthy dose of fire influence with just a dash of lunar energy for spice. The main colors are red, bright orange, metals are steel or iron, wear corduroy fabric. Try malachite, red jasper, tigers eye, lodestone or topaz gemstones, wisteria fragrance and serve garlic, peppers and ginger with the main dish at dinnertime. Add the spoonful or dash of lunar influences by serving such as well cooked vegetables or a dairy dish. Additional color and fragrance choices are, sea foam green, velvet fabric, gems include a moonstone or pearl. Add geraniums and ferns as house plants. Fortunately the Moon moves quickly and a difficult lunar passage is ephemeral, lasting just a day or two.

The Sun Cure

A negative solar transit assures bossiness, arrogance and an inflated ego. The Sun is so powerful that it provides its own antidote. Incorporate these into your life to create the loving and reliability as well as stable leadership which Sol can bring. Use sunny colors such as lemon, coral and crimson. Wear gold and use rich fabrics such as brocade and lame or quilted and embellished items. Gemstones are diamonds, rubies, amber and peridot. Fragrances include frankincense and lemon. Have a diet of citrus fruits and fruity breads and cakes (raisin, banana and yes, fruit cake!). Sweeten everything at the table with honey and add marigolds, palms, gladioli or olive trees as house plants. A difficult Solar transit can last up to a month.

The Mercury Cure

When Mercury is afflicted (and retrograde) there is a scattered and fretful energy afoot. Its impossible to concentrate, school work and job performance can suffer. The antidote comes through Jupiter. Try the colors sky blue and royal purple. The metal tin, silky-satiny fabrics, the gems turquoise and amethyst, fragrance jasmine and samples of rich gourmet foods will be good. When the blues build and especially during the evening hours drink cider mulled with cloves and cinnamon or a hot ginseng tea. Plants to have near you are iris, clover, oak trees, mint and blueberry bushes. A difficult Mercury transit can last, when retrograde, for just over two months, usually it’s just three weeks though.

The Venus Cure

When Venus is under siege Laziness, promiscuity, wastefulness and false love abound. There is a lack of motivation and a tendency to drain others.

The antidote is serious and thrifty Saturn. Select deepest navy blues, forest greens and browns as colors. The metal is pewter, tweed and heavy woolen fabrics are best. Try garnet, onyx and lapis as gemstones. The fragrance pine and holly and ivy as house plants as well as a bonsai tree will create a healing atmosphere. Plain and nourishing foods such as oatmeal, baked potatoes, heavy whole grain breads and dressings flavored with sage would be perfect. Apples and popcorn are the best desserts and snacks. A difficult Venus transit, if retrograde, can last several months, usually it’s about 4 weeks though

The Mars Cure

Abusive behavior, accidents, sun burns, destruction, violence, anger and excessive competitiveness go with a negative Mars transit. To transmute this into a positive energy sprinkle moon dust, the cool, gentle Moon is the cure.

Display a dreamy, foggy seascape in your home or work place, perhaps with a lighthouse theme. Take a walk along a lake or go to the sea coast. Select colors in the aqua to emerald range. Wear or carry sea shells, coral and cats eye as well as moonstone. Calm the touch with silver objects, plush and velveteen fabrics. Remember foods that were childhood family favorites. Fruit pies, cookies, vegetable soup or a casserole are good choices. Soothing fragrances are lily or honeysuckle, good plants include willow trees, rosemary, daisies and forget-me-nots. A difficult Mars transit usually lasts about 6 weeks, if retrograde it can be 8 months or so, though.

The Jupiter Cure

When Jupiter is afflicted by transit debts can skyrocket. Theres a tendency to over eat and pile on the pounds, overspend and gamble. Credibility can suffer as there is also a tendency to exaggerate at this time. The cure comes from rational, adaptable Mercury. Colors are mauve, violet and palest blues and yellows. Plastics are good choices for accessories and jewelry. Light weight fabrics such as gauze and chintz will offset Jupiters heavy feeling. Gemstones include beryl, agate and citrine. Try light and crunchy foods such as chips, granola and fresh vegetable slices. The aroma-therapies are licorice, fresh mown hay and lily of the valley. For plants put together a small herb garden with terra cotta pots of marjoram, savory and parsley. A difficult Jupiter transit lasts about a year.

The Saturn Cure

Negativity and defeat are the marks of a rough Saturn transit. It can be offset by incorporating gentle and loving Venus energy into the surroundings. Select cherry or rose as a fragrance. The colors are all shades of pink, light spring green and ivory. Soothing fabrics would be artificial fur and satin, the metal is copper. Favorable gems to wear or carry are rose quartz, tourmaline and canary diamonds. In your diet include peas, lentil soup, rye bread and intricate, beautiful desserts such as petit fours or custards. Flavor with vanilla, strawberries, pears or almonds. The fragrances would be light floral blends, friendly plants to cultivate are narcissus, pansy, thyme, spinach and plum trees. A difficult Saturn transit last about 2 1/2 years.

The Uranus Cure

A negatively aspected Uranus transit breaks down computers and other technology. Accidents, troublesome new acquaintances, breaks in nurturing relationships, nervousness, the bad side of the erratic and unpredictable are afoot. Nonconformity as a passing whim can cause real difficulty as well. The antidote comes from Jupiter. Also remember that Uranus is a higher octave of Mercury, so also consider the suggestions for the Mercury Cure to transcend this difficult time period. Combine Jupiters colors with a dash of Uranus own hues. Select bright, dazzling white, day-glow and electric hues, also royal blue and deep purple. The metal is aluminum, gems are all kinds of sapphires, including the blue star sapphire and the orange India sapphire. Good fabrics are nylon and polyester knit. Foods which can be cooked and served quickly such as micro wave pre packaged meals or take out meals are good choices. Peach blossom is a wonderful fragrance to try and how about setting a small cactus plant on the windowsill? A difficult Uranus transit can last for 7 years.

The Neptune Cure

When Neptune moves into a challenging transit addictive behaviors, illusions, disillusionment and really major misunderstanding reigns. Bring out the spiritual and inspirational energy of this complex planet by calling upon antidotes from Saturn. Check Venus cures too, as Neptune is a higher octave of Venus. Place saurian crystals in the windows to create rainbow effects, as a symbol of hope and good times after the storm. Smokey quartz is a good gemstone, try black, iridescent hues and pastels as color choices. Chiffon and also denim and burlap are good fabrics. The metal is platinum, foods include eggplant, custard, sea weeds and root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and beets. Serve herbal teas with meals. Earthy fragrances such as sage and rue are good aroma- therapies, Flowers to add to the home decor or work place include white roses, tiger lilies, mums or carnations. A difficult Neptune transit can last for 14 years.

The Pluto Cure

Negative Pluto trends bring an intense influence, hinting at rebirth and renewal after a visit to the Underworld. Crime and pollution can be afoot. Its a higher octave of Mars, so consider the suggestions for the Mars cure. Otherwise, its best to meet Pluto with its own medicine. Select earthy colors such as charcoal and chocolate. The metal is wrought iron and the fabric leatherette. Gemstones will include jet, Apache tears and all kinds of obsidian, particularly snowflake obsidian. For a nourishing dinner prepare curry, spicy Indian or Mexican dishes or Italian specialties, but keep the serving portions small. Earl Grey tea or ginger ale are favorable beverages.

Plants include autumn bouquet dried weed and flower arrangements with feather accents and dishes of fragrant potpourri. A difficult Pluto transit can last up to 20 years.

In conclusion, remember that your horoscope resembles a clock or watch face. The beauty and wonder of astrology lies simply in the secret of understanding time. Eventually all of the negative transits will move on, just as the hands of a clock move forward to the future. Be patient and use the mantra “this too shall pass”  meanwhile.

Earth Changes, Times of Transformation and Krakatoa

Astrological Look At The Biggest Bang Of All Time

By Dikki-Jo Mullen

Earth changes, The End Times, Ancient Prophecies. These are phrases uttered almost constantly by those who are caring and aware. I often like to begin personal consultation session with clients as well as presentations to groups and classes with ” I’m not an end of the worlder but ….”

The but is followed by a reference as to how the world were familiar with really is in a time of great change and renewal. We all have to hold on for the ride, enjoy all we have and do the best we can. As I am writing this, in September of 2013, the floods in Colorado, the burning of the iconic Board Walk on the Jersey shore, political and economic turmoil on so many levels and more are indicators that something is happening, an energy field is at work, certainly.

To maintain perspective and faith that all will be well in the end, lets look at the greatest Earth Change and explosion (natural or man made) that has ever occurred. The planet and humanity did survive of course, so this feature is dedicated to the various changes in progress and the future.

To grow is to change. To change often is to grow much.

Each Century has had its doomsday prophets. Since at least the year 352 C.E. The End has been predicted. With my Moon and Mercury in sunny, optimistic Leo, it is such a challenge to maintain a calm, tolerant perspective when I get the latest news about a scary cosmic event or planetary alignment causing a wave of panic. The celestial cycles just indicate that as the heavens move and shift, so does earthly life. Remember as above, so below.

Natural or man made, the biggest explosion of all time took place on August 27, 1883 at 5:30 AM on the island of Krakatoa, located South of the Philippines half way between Australia and India in what was then French Indo China (110E22, 7S48 LMT variation for that year, for astrologers who want to calculate the whole chart would have been -7:21).

It was a volcanic eruption. 300 miles away British sailors suffered burst ear drums. 2300 miles away in Australia the explosion was so intense that so violently shook the ground that residents were terrified. The chaos reached half a world away to the English Channel where ships moored tossed and capsized. Four hours after the eruption the area around the island was in total darkness, due to the vast amount of volcanic ash hovering in the sky. For a year afterward this cloud circled the planet, creating spectacular. gothic sunsets, but effectively blocking out any summer season. It came to be known as The Year Without Summer. Vampires were in their glory.

Ocean waves 150 feet high arose to wipe out 350 villages on neighboring islands. 36,000 people were killed almost instantly. The flames shooting 25 miles high triggered violent electrical storms around the planet.

Astrologically the event chart for The Eruption of Krakatoa is really interesting. Here is a list of the important planetary positions.

Data Table

Ascendant (first house, rising sign) is 23 degrees Leo 01

Venus -26 Leo 29 – 1st house

Sun – 3 Virgo 16 -1st house

Uranus -22 Virgo 26 – 1st house

Mercury -25 Virgo 59

26 Virgo (2nd house cusp)

29 Libra 55 (3rd house cusp)

North Moon Node 4 Scorpio 26 – 3rd house

29 Scorpio 30 -4th house cusp

26 Sagittarius 29 – 5th house cusp

23 Capricorn 23 – 6th house cusp

23 Aquarius 01 – 7th house cusp

26 Pisces 56- 8th house cusp

29 Aries 59 – 9th house cusp

Neptune 21 Taurus 05 Retrograde – 9th house

10th house (mid-heaven) is 29 Taurus 30

Pluto 1 Gemini 12 -10th house

Chiron 3 Gemini 31 – 10th house

Saturn 9 Gemini 30 – 10th house

Moon 24 Gemini 57 -10th house

26 Gemini 29 -11th house cusp

Mars 1 Cancer 45 -11th house cusp

23 Cancer 23 – 12th house cusp

Jupiter 24 Cancer 30 -12th house

Astrologers who set up this chart will see an almost perfect bundle pattern. The Moon node offers an important clue, as the Node shows where eclipses fall. On April 22, 1883 there was a lunar eclipse at 2 Scorpio and on May 6, 1883 there was a solar eclipse at 16 degrees Taurus. The August, 1883 lunations were a New Moon at 10 Leo 45 and a Full Moon at 25 Aquarius 09. Eclipses and lunations (New and Full Moons) will often be indicators of how events are triggered and unfold.

The Biggest Bang volcanic eruption chart shows a Yod (the eye or finger of God aspect, a rare aspect pattern linked to fate) at the Full Moon with the 25 Aquarius Moon quincunx Jupiter as well as the Uranus-Mercury conjunction. The New Moon at 1 Leo was sextile Pluto in Gemini and semi-sextile Mars in Cancer. The transiting Moon at the explosion at 24 Gemini squared the Gemini planets, triggering the Yod.

The eclipse pattern of the year afflicted Neptune (ruler of the seas) in Taurus (a zodiac sign tied to the Earth itself). Negative fixed stars in Taurus (Menkar and Pleiades) are near the pattern. The Sun was square Chiron in this cataclysmic event chart, and Neptune was square both Venus and the ascendant. Jupiter in Cancer, its sign of exaltation, is in the 12th house. This has been called the guardian angel in the horoscope. This showed recovery, eventual return to normalcy and perhaps hidden spiritual forces at work.

So what does this glimpse at the past mean to you in the here and now? Well, Jupiter is in Cancer until June, 2014. Periodically the planetary transits make a Yod formation with the transiting Saturn-Pluto sextile will be quincunx a third transit. The 2013 eclipse pattern is heavily Scorpio-Taurus. Pluto (in the Earth sign of Capricorn) is strongly aspected, much is quite like it was in the 1883 chart. There might well be another statement about who is really in charge coming from Mother Earth before the end of 2014. Dont worry, be happy, smell the flowers and look forward to the future when it becomes time to let go of the past. Mediate on Krakatoa today. At present the scene of the biggest bang is rich with diverse flora and fauna, it dwells peacefully in the bright sunlight, a quiet pocket of paradise.

Uranian Astrology

The Widening of the Cosmos and You

By Dikki-Jo Mullen

Astrology, which means speech of the stars, has been practiced in many ways the world over during the past four thousand years or so. Various methods of analyzing the patterns in the heavens in order to better understand life on Earth and human destiny have included the Chinese Calendar, the Vedic Astrology of India, Celtic Astrology, Native American Medicine Wheel Zodiacs and of course the beloved Tropical Zodiac. That is the one familiar to most astrology fans.

Of the more esoteric, fascinating and exotic techniques favored by star gazers, Uranian Astrology is outstanding. Uranian Astrology (also called the Hamburg School) was developed in Germany during the early 20th century by Alfred Witte (1878 – 1943) and Friedrich Sieggrun (1879 – 1951). This type of astrology accents the midpoints between the familiar planets you would know in your birth chart. Added to a concise and complex midpoint chart are eight hypothetical planets; Cupid, Hades, Zeus, Kronos, Ademetus, Apollo, Vulcanus and Poseidon. These planets are thought to orbit beyond Neptune and Pluto. Precise ephemerides (astrology tables) have been calculated for them. As improbable as all of this sounds at first, Uranian Astrology has proven to be remarkably accurate. Most of the important texts are published in German. However, Roger A. Jacobsens book The Language of Uranian Astrology does offer good basic instruction in English.

Here are the key characteristics of the Uranian planets. If you are interested in them and would like me to include them in your own horoscope consultation, please request them when you make your next astrological appointment and I will be happy to go over what they indicate for you.

As the name of the love God hints represents integrative unity and coordination. Heredity, clannishness, groups and harmony are the factors impacted.

Named in honor of the Underworld, Hades is about dissolution to make way for new forms, as occurs in death. Some keynotes are breaking away from negativity, the past and waste in order to attain purification.

Named for the leader of the Gods, this is a planet of fulfillment and realization. Ambitions, productivity, goals, controlled energy and purpose are all factors.

A father figure in mythology, Kronos becomes a symbol of mastery and a job completed in Uranian astrology. Elitism, superiority and big government are impacted.

The light, music and prophecy are ruled by Apollo. This is a highly cultural energy. Education, travel, peaceful and prosperous activities leading to enlightenment, perception and broad spectrums of possibility are addressed.

Named for the King of Pherae, who sought eternal life and release from death, this planet represents the physical limits of human bodies, form, inertia, endurance, habits, definitions and termination.

Associated with Vulcan, the crippled and gifted blacksmith, Vulcanus is linked to staying power, developing potential strengths, intensity and coercion.

Reflecting the deepest mysteries of the seas, Poseidon is a spiritual influence. Philosophy, truth, wisdom and higher consciousness are key factors.

Astrology and Meditation

Astrology and How To Meditate

Meditation and The Void Moon

By Dikki-Jo Mullen

Its the eve before a Friday the 13th and the Moon is just turning void of course. What to do, how to make the most of a lovely but low energy and uneventful afternoon?

A void Moon occurs twelve times in an average month. It can last just a few seconds or for two days or more on end. The Void of course Moon is when the Moon is exiting one zodiac sign, bereft of major aspects but has not yet entered the next zodiac sign. This time period shows a holding pattern of events lacking in consequence. Efforts come to little, its hard to accomplish much. A dreamy quality prevails.

In reflecting upon this void of course time period, which lasts until just before dawn tomorrow, I thought of how these time periods lend themselves to meditation. We hear so much of meditation and its benefits. Still, so many people are uncertain of how to begin to meditate or even exactly what meditation is. The word meditate means simply to reflect and contemplate. A quiet mind usually finds the right answers. The regular practice of meditation leads to the tapping of reservoirs of energy and talent which otherwise remain dormant and elusive. Experts teach that most of us use far less than 10% of our mental and physical potential. If there might be a way to unleash even an additional 1 % think of the difference for the better it might make in ones life in terms of health, intelligence and creativity.

Spiritual disciplines of all kinds emphasize the importance of quiet reflection. This is the contemplative or meditative state. While meditating the alpha brave wave activity increases. These are the brain patterns associated with free floating creativity and the spontaneity of childhood. In contrast most people have an overload of beta brain waves which are related to stressful daily demands. There are two other types of brain waves, the delta and theta states, these are linked to deep sleep and being unconscious.

Even 15 minutes a day in the alpha state, which is akin to daydreaming, can lead to better physical health and generate a positive mental state. Sometimes it helps to attend a group to facilitate ease in meditation. Try to set aside a regular time each day for meditation. The rhythm of your mind and body will begin to adjust to the alpha state more easily. Either the early morning or right before bed are usually the best times to meditate. Turn off the phone, keep noise and other distractions to a minimum.

Here is a technique for simple and effective meditation. Follow it for a few weeks, you can expect to be astounded and delighted by the changes for the better which it facilitates in your life.

Sit comfortably in a chair or lie down on the floor. Be careful to keep the spine straight. Let your body go limp. Breathe in and out several times. As you exhale release anger, disappointment and anxiety. When you inhale focus your thoughts on wellness and love. Close your eyes. Focus the closed eyes slightly upward and imagine a blank screen in the center of your forehead. Now hold the thought of a favorite spiritual symbol and place it in the center of the screen. The symbol can be an ankh, crucifix, pentagram, Star of David, a flower, a butterfly, dragonfly, the Sun, or Moon, etc. Hold the symbol on the screen before you, bring your thoughts back to contemplating the symbol if they wander. After a few minutes let your symbol dissolve and wait to see what thoughts or visions appear on your screen. Make a note of these. Often I get an idea for a writing project, art work or perhaps psychic insights into friends or world situations.

It you find it difficult to sit and meditate add incense and candles and perhaps a favorite fragrance to create atmosphere. For some this helps to generate a pleasurable calmness and concentration. Some people benefit from soft music playing, while others find music distracting. Experiment, see what is most helpful to you. You might want to purchase a poster of a mandala to use in meditation, or even create your own design. The famous psychologist Dr. Carl Jung emphasized the power of mandala meditation. He designed many for personal use.

It is impossible to live a worthwhile life without good health. Here is a technique to begin to meditate for perfect health. Follow the first steps as described above. As you dissolve the spiritual symbol let its energy flow toward any injured or aching parts of your body. Then let light fill the area affected, now turn it to water and allow it to flow away. After a few attempts you will begin to experience relief. Be alert concerning the people and events active in your surroundings following meditation. What is entering your world? Often the answer to a problem will just materialize or appear in an unexpected manner. You might also find a treatment for the problem. For example a few years ago I suffered from terrible headaches. Two different doctors were not helpful at all. Applying the technique of dissolving the pain to water helped somewhat. The one day a message came in mediation, I was drinking too much coffee . I was told in meditation to cut down on the caffeine consumption. I did and the headaches have never come back!

Meditation has helped me in so many other ways. It will work for you too if you just give it a chance. Try regular daily meditation for four weeks, thats one lunar cycle. Keep a journal. Expect to be amazed by the growth and various benefits that meditation brings your way upon reviewing your journal!

The Full and New Moons each month are peak times when meditation can bring special insights and benefits. The Moon, astrologically, links especially to the subconscious and accessing the deeper mind. Also note how the Moon’s sign each day impacts meditation in your life.
