Astrology and How To Meditate
Meditation and The Void Moon
By Dikki-Jo Mullen
Its the eve before a Friday the 13th and the Moon is just turning void of course. What to do, how to make the most of a lovely but low energy and uneventful afternoon?
A void Moon occurs twelve times in an average month. It can last just a few seconds or for two days or more on end. The Void of course Moon is when the Moon is exiting one zodiac sign, bereft of major aspects but has not yet entered the next zodiac sign. This time period shows a holding pattern of events lacking in consequence. Efforts come to little, its hard to accomplish much. A dreamy quality prevails.
In reflecting upon this void of course time period, which lasts until just before dawn tomorrow, I thought of how these time periods lend themselves to meditation. We hear so much of meditation and its benefits. Still, so many people are uncertain of how to begin to meditate or even exactly what meditation is. The word meditate means simply to reflect and contemplate. A quiet mind usually finds the right answers. The regular practice of meditation leads to the tapping of reservoirs of energy and talent which otherwise remain dormant and elusive. Experts teach that most of us use far less than 10% of our mental and physical potential. If there might be a way to unleash even an additional 1 % think of the difference for the better it might make in ones life in terms of health, intelligence and creativity.
Spiritual disciplines of all kinds emphasize the importance of quiet reflection. This is the contemplative or meditative state. While meditating the alpha brave wave activity increases. These are the brain patterns associated with free floating creativity and the spontaneity of childhood. In contrast most people have an overload of beta brain waves which are related to stressful daily demands. There are two other types of brain waves, the delta and theta states, these are linked to deep sleep and being unconscious.
Even 15 minutes a day in the alpha state, which is akin to daydreaming, can lead to better physical health and generate a positive mental state. Sometimes it helps to attend a group to facilitate ease in meditation. Try to set aside a regular time each day for meditation. The rhythm of your mind and body will begin to adjust to the alpha state more easily. Either the early morning or right before bed are usually the best times to meditate. Turn off the phone, keep noise and other distractions to a minimum.
Here is a technique for simple and effective meditation. Follow it for a few weeks, you can expect to be astounded and delighted by the changes for the better which it facilitates in your life.
Sit comfortably in a chair or lie down on the floor. Be careful to keep the spine straight. Let your body go limp. Breathe in and out several times. As you exhale release anger, disappointment and anxiety. When you inhale focus your thoughts on wellness and love. Close your eyes. Focus the closed eyes slightly upward and imagine a blank screen in the center of your forehead. Now hold the thought of a favorite spiritual symbol and place it in the center of the screen. The symbol can be an ankh, crucifix, pentagram, Star of David, a flower, a butterfly, dragonfly, the Sun, or Moon, etc. Hold the symbol on the screen before you, bring your thoughts back to contemplating the symbol if they wander. After a few minutes let your symbol dissolve and wait to see what thoughts or visions appear on your screen. Make a note of these. Often I get an idea for a writing project, art work or perhaps psychic insights into friends or world situations.
It you find it difficult to sit and meditate add incense and candles and perhaps a favorite fragrance to create atmosphere. For some this helps to generate a pleasurable calmness and concentration. Some people benefit from soft music playing, while others find music distracting. Experiment, see what is most helpful to you. You might want to purchase a poster of a mandala to use in meditation, or even create your own design. The famous psychologist Dr. Carl Jung emphasized the power of mandala meditation. He designed many for personal use.
It is impossible to live a worthwhile life without good health. Here is a technique to begin to meditate for perfect health. Follow the first steps as described above. As you dissolve the spiritual symbol let its energy flow toward any injured or aching parts of your body. Then let light fill the area affected, now turn it to water and allow it to flow away. After a few attempts you will begin to experience relief. Be alert concerning the people and events active in your surroundings following meditation. What is entering your world? Often the answer to a problem will just materialize or appear in an unexpected manner. You might also find a treatment for the problem. For example a few years ago I suffered from terrible headaches. Two different doctors were not helpful at all. Applying the technique of dissolving the pain to water helped somewhat. The one day a message came in mediation, I was drinking too much coffee . I was told in meditation to cut down on the caffeine consumption. I did and the headaches have never come back!
Meditation has helped me in so many other ways. It will work for you too if you just give it a chance. Try regular daily meditation for four weeks, thats one lunar cycle. Keep a journal. Expect to be amazed by the growth and various benefits that meditation brings your way upon reviewing your journal!
The Full and New Moons each month are peak times when meditation can bring special insights and benefits. The Moon, astrologically, links especially to the subconscious and accessing the deeper mind. Also note how the Moon’s sign each day impacts meditation in your life.
I have tried to meditate so many times but never seem to be able to quiet my mind. (I bet a lot of people say that….)
