Watching For Hecate
By Dikki-Jo Mullen
The 13th of the month! Although it is on a Monday, not a Friday, in November, 2023, the numerology of 13 foreshadows the mood. Mystery, darkness, supernatural and subtle, November’s New Moon highlights a magical quality. It ushers in the deepening part of The Gloom Time. Not gloomy as in negative, but instead suggesting quiet embracing shadows and calming hours of darkness. As the evenings begin sooner and the nights grow longer the world looks different. Suddenly the bright sunlit hours pass unmarked. Everything is about what is going on in the dark, beneath the surface. Its appeal is in its subtlety. This New Moon takes place at 4:27 am EST at 20 degrees Scorpio 43 minutes. It is in the Pluto/Moon ruled decanate of Scorpio. Dreams, sensitivity and the chthonic underworld are opening to reveal the path to transformation. Many death metaphors are around us, but this isn’t about perishing in a negative sense. Instead it allows the old to run its course in order to welcome renewal. Or so we would like to think. Avoid panic as the darkness gathers. In “Degrees of the Zodiac” by Charubel (Alan Leo) this degree is symbolized by “a buffalo pawing on an eminence (rocky cliff). The message is one of boldness, independence and assertiveness. This New Moon is in orb of a conjunction with the fixed star Unukalhai (also known as Alpha Serpentis) It’s located in the constellation of Serpens. It has the nature of Mars and Saturn.
This star is orange in color. It is visible from Central Florida at about 9pm in the evening this month. Look toward the southwest direction. A sky map can help you locate the constellation Serpens where Unukahai /Alpha Serpentis is the brightest star. It is believed by some to have a negative influence, causing accidents, violence, and danger of poison. However, if used positively, its influence can be redirected to assure good fortune in healing or teaching.
At this New Moon there is a conjunction with the Sun and Moon and Mars in Scorpio near Unukalhai. These three significant celestial bodies are also in an opposition with Uranus in Taurus. The message is to approach others in a positive manner, channel all efforts in a positive direction and deescalate any conflict. The three Scorpio placements are in a mutually applying trine with retrograde Neptune in Pisces. This promises realizations and guidance coming through dreamwork and meditation. Intuition and patience offer your best guidelines. The New Moon sets the activity pace for the next four weeks. Write a wish list during the 8 hours following the lunation to watch your wishes materialize near the Full Moon on November 28. A new lunar cycle commences on December 12, 2023.
Hecate Night, November 16, closely reflects the mood of this November 13 New Moon. Hecate’s nature is transformative, she is a goddess of the night, storms and crossroads. Her nature is otherworldly, or perhaps underworldly. Watch for her traveling with large black dogs, draped in a swirling black cloak. “Howl to Hecate” was a favorite bumper sticker which adorned an old VW I drove back and forth to college long ago. Hecate! This dark crone of the old ways might await to guide seekers during the November nights near the Scorpio New Moon. Watch for her, especially at crossroads.
This 2023 Thanksgiving holiday ideally should be celebrated in a simple and calm way, reflecting upon all that there is to be grateful for. Remember to offer a prayer, especially if you are able to sit down to savor a favorite dish or two.
